Randall “Randy” Follis passed away in Aztec, NM on July 25, 2024 at the age of 84. His family, friends and many people from his San Juan County community will greatly miss him. Randy was born December 1, 1939 in Corsicana, TX to Oran Luther Follis and Lucille Woodard Follis. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Luther Grant Follis. He is survived by his wife, Alison Foote Follis of Aztec, his sister, Edna Sanders of Hillsboro, TX, his daughter, Leah Barker and husband Anthony of Albuquerque, NM, his son Marcus Bradley and wife Moverine of Menard, TX, 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He grew up in Texas and graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1958. He lived in Texas through the mid 1960’s, then relocated to New Mexico where he began painting at the age of 27 after he received some art supplies as a gift. He then enrolled in art classes in Hobbs, NM which set him on the path to fulfilling his passion of bringing the west to life through his art.
Randy became a renowned artist of the Southwest. He received multiple awards and he was highlighted in many publications over the years. His artwork can be seen in homes worldwide as well as in a robust collection at San Juan College in Farmington, NM. He was once quoted as saying, “I find the Southwestern United States, with its many cultures and moody vistas, a most captivating location. It’s hard to believe that such a harsh and desolate appearing area holds so much stimulating beauty.” Though this grizzly bear sized cowboy has ridden off into the sunset, he will be remembered much like his perspectives of the Southwest – a bit rugged on the outside with a captivating beauty that shone through with his kind heart, quick humor, and unlimited talents.
Plans are in process for a family memorial service.
